Gino Zani, dead in 1964, was an engineer, a designer, a city planner, a scholar, an historian, a curator of the archival, librarian, museum and archeological properties of the Republic of San Marino. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death, San Marino celebrates the man who drew again the Historic Centre of San Marino with a philatelic issue dedicated to the architecture. The 0.20€ value shows the Puntone della Murata nuova, the only one rafter with a pentagonal plan, rebuilt in 1938, connection between Teatro Titano and Ospedale della Misericordia. The 0.30€ value depicts the Portici del Mercato, designed by Zani in the 1940s and built in the postwar period. It was an important architectural work that connected the arcade with the squares and the nearby streets and provided the market a protection from the rain. The 4.00€ value represents the Portici e Cripta di Sant’Agata, excavated in the rock and inaugurated in 1941. Gino Zani’s son was Dr Giorgio Zani, General Manager of the Azienda Autonoma di Stato Filatelica e Numismatica for a long time.
