2€ commemorative 2020 "500th anniversary of the death of Raffaello"

Code: 320

Raffaello, son of Giovanni Santi and scholar of the Perugino, was painter and architect. He had a precocious talent and he acknowledged embodying the supreme ideal of serenity and beauty of Renaissance. The obverse of the coin dedicated to the 500th anniversary of his death depicts the profile of the Virgin, a detail of the fresco “Madonna di Casa Santi”, which is the first masterpiece of the young Raffaello and is located in his family’s house in Urbino (currently seat of the eminent Accademia Raffaello). The work of art reproduces the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus, who is sleeping on her knees, and it is pervaded by the tenderness of the intimacy between mother and child, a recurring theme of Raffaello’s artistic production.
