25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

Code: 263

A 5€ uncirculated silver coin celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The reverse of the coin designed by Maria Grazia Urbani depicts a view of the Berlin Wall and in the centre the inscription “Berliner Mauer 1961-1989”. Behind the Wall, the Brandenburg Gate, the most famous monument of the city that during the cold war was in East Berlin. To the right of the coin, the statue placed on the Victory Column, sited in the centre of one of the main roundabouts of the city. Built in a night, since 1961 the Wall has opposed for 28 years two lifestyles, two world concepts, symbol of the division of Europe. An iron curtain that after 25 years seems to belong to a prehistoric era. A concrete rock that, with barbed wire, 4 metres high, 155 kilometres long, represented the contraposition of two systems and also the inner border of a Nation, Germany, and a city, Berlin, and that since 1961 has divided families, friends, a whole generation. The memory goes back to the 9th November 1989, when the fall of the Wall, destroyed by pickaxes, marked the end of a terrible history. The obverse of the coin, designed by Antonella Napolione, shows the coat of arms of the Republic of San Marino.
